The sky above the Weißhorn is the focus of a nocturnal hike under the motto ‘A look into the past’ on Wednesday, 14 August in the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage Site Bletterbach with the Planetarium South Tyrol, the amateur astronomers ‘Max Valier’ and the South Tyrol Museum of Nature.
During the nocturnal excursion on the Jochgrimm, stargazers and geology enthusiasts will not be gazing into the deep Bletterbach gorge for once, but will instead turn their attention upwards to the sky above the Weisshorn. With the help of two telescopes, David Gruber, Director of the South Tyrol Museum of Nature, and Brigitte Lintner from the amateur astronomers ‘Max Valier’ will be able to observe the moon with its craters, the planet Saturn, the Milky Way and - with a bit of luck - many a shooting star. Geologist Benno Baumgarten will explain the special features of the planets, as the Bletterbach Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage Site has more in common with the distant celestial stars than you might think at first glance.
An open-air exhibition on the Jochgrimm will once again impressively demonstrate the parallels between Bletterbach and Mars and can be viewed before the evening event.
