Bolzano and its suburbs can be read as a large laboratory in which different modes of urban and social development were experimented throughout the 20th century. A fundamental role in this process fell to the social housing estates, which represented the basic cell in the construction of the new neighbourhoods and the main element of identity of the new communities settled.
