Christian Kjellvander Band @ Pippo Stage

The “Scandinavian cowboy” Christian Kjellvander is the pioneer of a vibrant music scene with Nick Drake, Leonard Cohen, Mark Lanegan, Bergman, and Kaurismäki at its heart.
Kjellvander was born in Ystad, a port town on the southern tip of Sweden, and began making music at a young age, first with the alt-country band Loosegoats and then as a solo artist. His music is sparse, sometimes desolate and nocturnal, capturing the contrasts and chiaroscuro of his homeland. It is based on his voice, both warm and hushed, and on acoustic instruments like guitars, banjo, cello, and violin. These lunar landscapes are occasionally complemented by a female voice or an electric guitar, capable of suddenly stripping the song bare in its most dramatic moments.
He tells stories of impossible loves, broken promises, journeys, departures, and returns from the port of that small town south of Sweden and north of everything else, sung by one of the most authoritative voices on the Scandinavian scene. Despite his relatively young age, he has influenced artists such as The Tallest Man on Earth, Bjorn Kleinhenz, Thomas Jonsson, Kristofer Åström, Tarantula Waltz, Lancaster Orchestra, Perishers, and Damien Jurado.
Just over forty years old, Christian Kjellvander has already released over 30 (!) albums and played alongside extraordinary musicians including Leonard Cohen and Ryan Adams. America, where he also lived, has always represented an escape to the West and its myth, but Kjellvander has never renounced his love for the places of his childhood.
His ballads resemble timeless black and white photographs, constantly revealing new secrets with each listen.
