The Stabat Mater by G.B. Pergolesi (1710–1736) is a sacred music work that can be counted among the absolute masterpieces of the Baroque period.
The text, written in medieval Latin, describes the sorrow of the Mother of Jesus at the foot of the cross, as well as the emotions of Christians faced with the sacrifice of the Redeemer and the suffering of the Virgin Mary.
The music, of the highest inspiration, was considered profoundly innovative at the time, to the extent that J.S. Bach himself created a German adaptation of it.
Even today, it remains one of the most beloved pieces among audiences and musicians, as it is profoundly moving for the uninitiated and rich in vibrant spirituality for believers.
The instrumentation includes two singers (soprano and alto), strings, and organ.
