The Stelvio Pass gives its name to the Stelvio National Park. To mark the anniversary, you can enjoy the view of the highest section of the historic pass road and learn about some aspects of its history during a guided hike along the Signalkopfsteig trail from Franzenshöhe to the Stelvio Pass.

The Stelvio Pass road was built between 1820 and 1825 by order of the Austrian Emperor Franz I in order to create a fast connection to Lombardy, which at the time, like South Tyrol, belonged to Austria. After its inauguration, sections at high risk of avalanches were secured with wooden avalanche protection tunnels. Until the middle of the 19th century, the pass road was even open in winter and could be travelled on horse-drawn sleighs.
