I PEGGIORI THE SARCASTIC AND CYNICAL DESCRIPTION OF A SOCIETY IN DISARRAY. WITH AN ALL-STAR CAST.
Review by Paola Casella
Three sons over 40 are asked by their father to make a very high personal sacrifice, and they have to decide who will be willing to accept it. A company executive is kidnapped by a former employee who demands his never-paid severance pay from him. Two radical chic parents go to the home of their enriched and coercive umbrella neighbours to confront them with the lawlessness committed by their children. An inconsolable widower dusts off his old magic tricks to help his entertainer daughter at a party: but the child being celebrated is the son of the man whose betrothed he stole. Four episodes, each one dedicated to a holiday - Christmas, May Day, Ferragosto and Halloween - played by a team of actors who are well rooted and well known to the public, with Edoardo Leo and Massimiliano Bruno again alternating directing and writing, and sometimes joined by other writers.
I peggiori giorni is the sequel to the episodic comedy I migliori giorni (The Best Days) and further accelerates the cynicism and bitterness of classic Italian comedy, escalating from one episode to the next and grappling with highly topical themes.
The first episode, written by and starring Edoardo Leo and Marco Bonini on a subject by Alessandro Aronadio and Renato Sannio, reprises the characters played by Leo (here also directing), Bruno and Foglietta as the three knife brothers, each one completely egoriferous and focused on his own interests. The second, again written by Leo (who also directs) and Bonini, is a painful confrontation between two losers of our times who both discover themselves to be victims of the capitalist system bent on shredding and engulfing all those who end up in its gears. The third episode, written by Massimiliano Bruno, Andrea Bassi and Gianni Corsi and directed by Bruno, is perhaps the most terrible, because it brings into play the ferocity and lack of empathy and respect of youth that are increasingly making the headlines. Here too, no one is saved, neither the neurotic intellectuals and their social daughter, nor the cohorts and their violent, sexist children raised on traps and false myths. The fourth episode, directed by Bruno and co-written by him with Beatrice Campagna, Salvatore Fazio and Herbert Simone Paragnani, hints at a light of hope, but still unfolds on the notes of a wickedness born of an unbearable existential malaise.I peggiori giorni, as the title suggests, this time no longer ironic but openly pessimistic, describes a society in disarray made up of baseness and meanness, creating new monsters and new victims of economic degeneration
