Wildschönau cattle drive

Wildschönau cattle drive

Saturday 20 Sep

Wildschönau

10:00 - 16:30

During the traditional Almabtrieb in Auffach, Wildschönau, over 500 animals are driven from the Alpine pastures down into the valley. After the 'Gru-Nacht' – the last night before their return from the Alpine pastures – the animals are milked and adorned, a process locally called 'aufbischt'. Then they head down to the valley.

The celebrations begin at 10 AM with a large Alpine festival, featuring a craft and farmers' market at the Schatzbergbahn car park in Auffach. Local female farmers offer specialities such as Brodakrapfen, Schmalznudeln, cheese, bacon, and other regional delicacies. Craftsmen demonstrate traditional techniques. The festival is musically opened by the Auffach Federal Music Band. Around midday, the first cows from the surrounding Alpine pastures arrive.
